A FUND to help young musicians has been set up in memory of the former manager of the Proclaimers who took his own life earlier this year.
Kai Davidson - who discovered the band when they were playing in a city club - fell to his death from a tower block in Restalrig in June. He was 44. "The Proclaimers were playing in a small basement place next to the Liquid Rooms. He dragged me down to see them. I thought they were quite fun but I never realised what they'd become. He became their first manager." Mr Guthrie, who is originally from Bruntsfield, said: "We've got a great pool of talent here in Edinburgh. I think our fund can deliver a unique service for young musicians." The organisers aim to raise money by holding concerts, applying for grants and selling merchandise through their website. Murdo MacLeod, who played with Kai in The Cateran and Joy Riders, said: "We toured together, recorded together and played together. Wherever he went, Kai was recognised as an innovator and a catalyst on the music scene." Kai's brother Calum Davidson paid tribute to him, saying: "Kai was not only a man with music in his heart, he also devoted much of his professional life outside music to helping others. "The fund will continue the theme of his work by offering practical support and sympathetic guidance to those who have the ambition and the ability but might lack the finance and practical skills to develop their talent." Application packs for the fund will be available in January.
